The mission of Joan's Story is to help patients and family members, who are going through a scary hospitalization situation. Joan’s Story is the result of two weeks, mostly in the intensive care unit, as I watched my sister Joan die tragically.

Throughout the hospital were posted “Patients’ Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.” However, nowhere did I see the rights of families, who spend long hours every day at the bedsides of loved ones. After creating Joan’s Family Bill of Rights, I began giving presentations to hospital staff, recommending ways to improve the hospital experience for patients and family members.

This website contains resources for patients and family members to help them cope with a chaotic and uncertain hospital environment. Please click on the links below for more information. My hope is that sharing Joan’s story will provide support for patients and their family members.

For healthcare professionals and staff, I created a counterpart to this website, entitled Joan's Family Bill of Rights, which contains resources to help healthcare staff improve patient satisfaction. Please visit the website at, and contact me to see how I can help you improve your patients’ experience.

Thank you,

Barbara Lewis
